Rigveda
Rigveda Manuscripts enter the “Memory of the World” Register
The BORI is extremely glad to know that a collection of 30
manuscripts of Rigveda in its possession is now a part of the
“Memory of the World” Register of the UNESCO.
Rigveda, the oldest known literature is the pride of the whole
nation. It is preserved by oral and written traditions over the
ages. One of the thirty manuscripts is on birch bark and the
rest on paper. The Mandala form of the Rigveda is found in some,
while the Ashtaka form in others. By and large the manuscripts
are in good condition.
The UNESCO recognition is a tribute, not only to the Rigveda as
a text, but also to the beautifully, carefully and accurately
calligraphed manuscripts and the caretakers of the manuscripts.
